Advice from the Dying to the Living, Episode 14

We’re live every Sunday morning at 9am UK time. You can join our facebook group to watch live, view archives, and join in the growing community and conversation that’s happening around this project.

In this conversation we began with this piece from the Long Now Foundation, about what the living can learn from the dying. Along the way we talked about the importance of welcoming everything, even what we can't change - and that while not everything can be changed, nothing can be changed that is not first faced by us. The episode includes this beautiful poem by Mona (Sono) Santacroce.

Advice from the Dying to the Living

Don’t just stand there with your hair turning gray,

soon enough the seas will sink your little island.

So while there is still the illusion of time, set out for another shore.

No sense packing a bag.

You won’t be able to lift it into your boat.

Give away all your collections.

Take only new seeds and an old stick.

Send out some prayers on the wind before you sail.

Don’t be afraid.

Someone knows you’re coming.

An extra fish has been salted.

— Mona (Sono) Santacroce (1928–1995)
